Child And Family Service

If you are an adoptive or permanent foster carer having concerns about your children, the Post-Adoption Centre's Child & Family Service has unparalleled experience in all aspects of adoptive relationships. We also have particular expertise in providing therapeutic support to black and multi-racial adopted children, and in trans-racial adoption. New Horizons offers individual counselling and support groups for Black and Asian young people and adults under 26 who have been affected by adoption of long term fostering.

Both parents and children using the service report a better understanding of adoption issues and an enhancement of family relationships.

Referral can be through the Advice_Line or from Social Services. For many families a comprehensive assessment is necessary, which includes parent and professional consultations, family, couple and individual child sessions. A detailed report is provided and the Centre can also arrange for a psychiatric and / or an educational psychologist's report if required.

Principles:

• Provide a comprehensive adoption support service
• Improve communication within families
• Increase parents' understanding of adoption
• Increase children's understanding of adoption
• Enhance children's identity and self esteem
• Promote healthy emotional development

Based on this assessment, the Service can recommend an appropriate treatment plan for the whole family. This may include intensive post-adoption therapeutic work for complex problems over a 3 to 6 month period, family sessions, child and adolescent therapy, disruption counselling or parenting skills support.
