10th February 2012 Identity and Contact - Re-Thinking the Link

How can professionals manage the anxieties of adoptive parents around this difficult area of care planning? How can contact be managed well for all the parties in contact?

Man and boyIdentity formation is commonly cited as one of the central purposes of post-adoption contact. Much contemporary research into open adoption claim that its benefits reside in the support it gives to the adopted child’s identity. Often, however, adopters and social workers report that it creates confusions, distress and chaotic behaviours in the children it intends to help.

This workshop will explore the complex relationship between forms of contact and identity in order to address two main questions: How do letters, photographs and visits from absent relatives help identity issues in adopted children? How can contact be better arranged or managed to facilitate that process?

This exploration will draw upon research in the fields of adoption and permanent placement, as well as PAC’s own practices.

Benefits of attending

  • Review your own practice around contact and in particular explore the link between contact and identity
  • Gain an overview of relevant research
  • Gain a better capacity to assess what different forms of contact can achieve for specific children
