Supporting black and minority ethnic adopted children: attachment and race
a new training and resource pack from PAC |
PAC is proud to announce the launch of a new training and resource pack for
professionals and parents, Supporting black and minority ethnic adopted
children: attachment and race.
Produced by PAC in partnership with Talawa Social Work Training and
Consultancy, the pack draws upon both organisations' vast experience of
providing ethnically sensitive adoption support services and is designed to
enhance knowledge and skills around child development, drawing together issues
of attachment and racial and cultural identity, with the aim of promoting better
outcomes for black and minority ethnic (BME) adopted children.
The pack can be used by adoption professionals as a comprehensive
training programme to aid them in running groups or workshops for parents of
BME adopted children, and by local authorities and adoption support agencies as
the basis for staff training. Adoptive parents and other permanent carers will also
find the pack useful as a resource to use within their families. |
 |
| |
| PAC can provide to local authorities, consortia and other agencies a three-day on-site training
programme based on the resource pack to adoptive parents and foster carers, or professionals. |
What's in the pack...
Section One: Child Development Modules and Background Papers
Twelve papers exploring in depth: the
child's developmental stages from prebirth
to ten years, including developmental
tasks following permanent placement;
attachment issues, racial identity and
racism from birth to adulthood; siblings;
contact; support for adopted children;
strategies in supporting and empowering
adopters; the role of fathers; plus further
reading resources. |
Section Two: Training Notes and
Resources
Training based on the pack is designed to
take place over three days. A separate
booklet is provided for each day: Day 1 -
Foundation Day; Day 2 - Attachment and
Identity; Day 3 - Identify and Self-Esteem.
Each booklet provides a comprehensive
outline of the progression of each day's
activities, detailed instructions of what will
be achieved at each stage and exercises
and accompanying materials. A CD-ROM
containing PowerPoint slides |
Section Three: Parent Resources
Elements from sections one and two of
the pack are reproduced, to allow parents
to reflect upon a range of ideas regarding
parenting BME children and to ensure they
have access to age appropriate developmental
information about their children as
they need it. Also included in this section
are a resource list, an outline of the theoretical
framework and practice principles
of PAC's Child & Family Therapeutic Service
and a number of parenting activities
to promote and strengthen secure attachment
and positive racial, ethnic, cultural
and adoptive identity. |
