Disclaimer
From 30th December 2005, individuals offering adoption support services must be registered as an Adoption Support Agency (ASA). This Directory is divided into three sections: those individuals who have registered as ASAs and provide adoption support; those who are in the process of registering and provide adoption support; and those who have completed PAC professional training. Those who are registered will hold a Certificate of Registration from CSCI (Commission for Social Care Inspection) which you are entitled to view; those who are in the process of Registration will have a letter from CSCI indicating that CSCI has received the application for registration with them, which you are entitled to view. Although these individuals, or groups of individuals, may not have the Certificate of Registration as yet, the letter shows that they have applied for and are awaiting inspection by CSCI and therefore are working within the guidelines of the new legislation and can provide adoption support services.
Introduction
This is a directory of counsellors and therapists who are either ASA Registered; in the process of ASA Registration or are currently counsellors at the Post-Adoption Centre (PAC), London, or who have undertaken one or more of the following PAC training courses: Post-Adoption Counselling & Training Skills (PACTS); Pre-Adoption Preparation Counselling Training Skills (PREPS); Adoption Counselling Expertise (ACE); Working with Severe Attachment Difficulties (WWAD); Foundation Module in Theraplay. All those listed are in addition members of and subscribe to the ethics of various professional bodies, most usually either the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) or the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). PAC’s role has been to provide training on pre and post-adoption issues. PACTS trained counsellors have studied post adoption issues, those with the PREPS qualification are trained in pre-adoption issues, while ACE counsellors have studied both sets of issues. The criteria for acceptance on the PACTS, PREPS and ACE courses is either a minimum of three years’ post-qualifying counselling experience (although in many cases counsellors have considerably more) or personal experience of adoption plus a recognised counselling qualification.
Those who have undertaken either PACTS, PREPS or ACE training are entitled to a full entry in the Directory. In order for them to continue to appear in the Directory one day’s training per year on any adoption issue is a requirement. Current PAC counsellors also have full entries, while WWAD trained counsellors are listed separately. PAC is not responsible for the professional conduct of the counsellors and therapists listed here. Any complaint about aspects of their service should be addressed directly to individual counsellors or the professional bodies of which they are members. In the unlikely event that your complaint is unresolved, please write to PAC. PAC is accredited by the British Accreditation Council (BAC) for Independent Further and Higher Education as a provider of training courses in the counselling of those involved in adoption, fostering and related issues. The PACTS, PREPS, ACE and WWAD courses are also accepted by some universities as accredited prior learning credits toward relevant qualifications. Counsellors of minority ethnic background are highlighted with a * Fees vary and should be discussed before and appointment is agreed.
