Statement about my practice: What I do and how I work

I use play and drama, story telling, art etc, as a therapeutic approach to exploring children’s life history with their adoptive (and foster) parents, having found children respond better to the privacy that fiction affords.
I work with adoptive families in their home, bringing materials with me.
Usually the children are aged between 3 and 14, though I have worked with some older teenagers and two year olds.  My service is mainly commissioned by the responsible local authority.  I prepare parents in advance, providing information on trauma, attachment, play and child development then engage them in the work with their children, usually ten weekly sessions of one hour duration per child, aiming for enhanced relationships, through improved mutual understanding of child’s past.
I require parents to be committed to helping their children recover. I am committed to working ethically and I evaluate my practice.
